Hello please let me introduce myself,
My name is Hazel Johnson and I’m your School Nurse based here at St Andrew’s School. I have over 22 years nursing experience and have specialised in Special Needs for the past 10 years. As I am now school based, I decided to increase my knowledge and skills in this area and I am currently studying for an additional qualification, a BA (Hons) in Education (SEND & Inclusion).
In school I am able to administer prescribed medications and see pupils who are feeling unwell; I can give nurse prescribed Paracetamol if necessary.
I offer regular health checks for students, including Heights, Weights and Blood Pressures, and work closely with our Community Paediatrician, Dr Sarah Hobday, Epilepsy Nurses, Continence nurses and the Complex Behaviour Team.
I am involved in delivering Health Promotion sessions to all classes, over the past year- topics covered include: Nutrition /Healthy Eating, Hand Hygiene, Teeth Cleaning and Fitness and Exercise. My notice board is full of photos of the children’s participation!
I also work with small groups looking more closely at ‘Puberty and Growing Up’, ‘Needle Desensitisation’, and supporting hospital appointments.
In June/July each year I have St Andrew’s School students with me for work experience, my ‘Nurse Apprentices’.
I am happy to discuss any health concerns you may have regarding your child, and direct you to the most suitable services. Please just ring through to the School Nurse Extension, if I am not available, please leave me a message and I’ll get back to you.
I aim to provide regular health updates on specific topics I am covering in school; most recently Dental Health has been prioritised.
